Oak Lake Attractions

Wildlife

The area surrounding Oak Lake has an abundance of animals and birds. The lake has a large number of Canada Geese nesting during the spring along with other watherfoul. Plum Lake Marsh, south of the lake, is an important staging area for waterfoul during the spring and fall migration. Everything from deer to beaver, otter and muskrat make their homes in the marsh. A leisurely drive through the countryside or a short walk may give you a glimpse of almost anything from a cheeky squirrel, to the lovely white-tailed deer. The variety of wildlife and scenery will provide many pleasant hours for photographers.

Fishing

The lake of Oak Lake, southwest of town, is stocked with perch, pickerel and northern pike. It is a famous fishing spot for many both in the summer and winter. The Assiniboine River, north of the town, also provides a challenge for all members of the sport fisherman. Kenworth Dam located at the east end of Kenton boasts good fishing for pickerel and northern pike.

Located just west of town is the Oak Lake Ox 'n' Cart Campground. There are 10 open sites for campers to choose from. Each site has its own fire pit, along with running water. There is quite a bit of open space nearby, used for baseball, or other activities. A great attraction for kids, is the playground equipment, which includes; a swing-set, sandbox, slide and two "seesaw" creatures. Public washrooms are available at our camp site, and wood is provided for firepits. A very affordable place to camp.

The weekend of November 26-28th,2004 was a busy time for the Community of Oak Lake. It started on Friday with the Village Christmas 'Red Bow' Shopping, continuing with the Olde Town Hall Gallery art exhibit opening which featured works by Kim Salo and Denise Parent. Friday evening the Oak Lake and Area Economic Development Board began the 'Light-Up' with an outdoor supper featuring chicken noodle soup donated by  Perogy Pantry , hot chocolate (donated by Vanguard Credit Union), hot dogs donated by Valleyview CO-OP and the buns donated by Weston's. Because of these business' generosity there was no charge for the food. There were fire pits to warm yourself by and visit with friends and neighbors. Throughout this time there was also rides on a wagon - complete with seats and bells (no 4 legged horses though - just 300hp). At 7:00 everyone gathered across the street to sing Christmas carols (led by some members of the "Noteable Women" Choir), be greeted by the Mayor of Oak Lake-Jeff Sigurdson and the President of the E.D.B.-Reg Kreutzer. The Christmas tree was then lit with each 'memory' bulb which had been purchased the previous weeks in memory of a departed loved one.
The Red Bow Village Christmas Shopping Adventure continued on Saturday and from all reports the shoppers had a great time and many 'passports' were handed out and completed.
Sunday morning was the start of a busy day for the 'Santa Brunch' crew. By 8:00 the Community Hall was busy with the food preparation and at 10:00 the doors opened for the first customers! Over 400 people crossed the threshold to enjoy a delicious brunch. Once the meal was eaten they could move on to join in the fun of the Silent Auction and the kids (and some adults) could have their picture taken with Santa. There was also crafts, games, cookie decorating, and face painting for the kids. The Kids Shopping Corner was a great place for the "under 12" crowd to do their shopping (all for a toonie) for Mom and Dad-complete with gift wrapping!
The weekend ended with the Annual Advent Service and community carol sing at the Mennonite Church. The evening ended with lunch and a time of fellowship.
That was the weekend of "Lighting Up" in Oak Lake. What a great way to begin the Christmas season of celebrating the birth of Christ!
